The Approach
Life After Life

E R I C K A T Z

The objects that surround us bear silent witness to our way of life, our habits, our patterns. They are our faithful companions, privy to our every mood and feeling. They make up an integral part of our memories. They are our heritage, emotional, social and cutural.
A chandelier frame metamorphosed into a coffee table, a saucepan lid turned into a lamp base, a tap spout that becomes a receptacle for Art Deco glasswork... Designing new purposes for materials diverted from their original function requires an ear attuned to the stories that objects are trying to tell, in order to combine their experiences into a new collective memory. Eric Katz rescues his objects from flea markets, junk shops, auction rooms or graveyards such as breakers' yards or scrap foundries and his approach, a gesture of defiance in the face of death and time, is rooted in his determination to give renewed life to objects that have been divested of life.
